2023 Candidate Information for Seeking Endorsement

Information about procedures for Candidates & Campaigns:

January 10, 2023

Greetings, candidates and campaigns interested in the 2023 Election Cycle!

Each year, the 46th District Democrats customarily adopt Endorsement Rules in March, hold candidate forums in April and May, and hold a large Endorsement Meeting the weekend immediately following Filing Week.

This year, the offices the district will endorse in are:

  • King County Council Positions within the boundaries of the 46th District
  • Seattle City Council Positions within the boundaries of the 46th District
  • School Board Positions within the boundaries of the 46th District
  • Any Special Elections to fill vacancies (if any)

More information will be added closer to the dates of 2023 endorsement activities.

In the meantime, please see the archive of 2022 information below, to get a sense of our endorsement program:

Thank you for your interest in receiving a 2022 endorsement from the 46th District Democrats!

Please take a moment to read our 2022 Endorsement Rules:

2022 46th District Democrats Endorsement Rules

The 2022 Endorsement Rules were adopted on March 30, 2022

The primary change for 2022 is the addition of approval voting as the candidate winnowing step in fields with more than two candidates, instead of the previous RCV process in 2021, and the multi-step winnowing used for many years prior.

For the 2022 endorsement process, we will be using the 2022 King County Democrats' (KCDCC) Endorsement Questionnaire, which may be found on the KCDCC endorsements page here:

2022 Questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KCDems2022Questionnaire

  • Note: The first few pages of the questionnaire and the final page are the same for all candidates, there may also be position-specific and/or jurisdiction-specific questions.

Campaigns will want to request a PDF copy at the end of the form to submit to the 46th LD.

NOTE:  It takes up to 72 hours to receive the PDF from King County, so be sure to allow time to get your PDF copy.

Completed questionnaires must be submitted via this link below to be considered.
You must submit your questionnaire directly to the 46th District Democrats at the link below to be considered. Questionnaires forwarded from the KCDCC, another LD Democratic organization, the King County Young Democrats, or a Democratic club or caucus will not be accepted.

Submit Questionnaire to the 46th LD Dems: Online endorsement questionnaire submission

Candidates must submit questionnaires at least 10 days in advance of the meeting at which they wish to be considered.  For the May endorsement meeting, the questionnaires must be submitted by 11:59pm on May 11, 2022 for the May 22, 2022 meeting for the candidate to be considered without a suspension of the rules regarding the questionnaire deadline.

When is the 46th's endorsement meeting?

Our endorsement meeting for the General Election will tentatively be Sunday, May 22, 2022 starting at 11:00am.  This will be a Zoom meeting, with the link published 10 days prior to the meeting, on the calendar linked to this website.

If the Endorsement Meeting is via Zoom, how do we register?

Closer to the meeting, the link to register will be posted on our home page blog.  Both guests and members register at the same link.

What about that candidate questionnaire?

We will be using the King County Democratic Central Committee questionnaire.   This should eliminate some work for candidates whose jurisdiction covers multiple legislative districts in 2022.  Please be aware, however, that we do post these questionnaires publicly.  Your answers should reflect the fact that anyone who reads our website will be able to see them.

In which races does the 46th endorse?

We endorse in races that are wholly or partly within the 46th Legislative District.

The current LD boundaries encompass Northeast Seattle, north of Sand Point Way to Windermere; North of 45th St to Aurora, and all territory east of Aurora north to the city limits of Seattle.  There are a few small variations of the boundary along Aurora, taking in a few splits of precincts west of Aurora.

Offices for which we consider endorsements include federal offices which overlap or encompass the 46th District, King County offices which overlap or encompass the 46th District, as well as all Washington statewide offices.

Do candidates have to sit for an endorsements committee interview?

No interview in the 46th.  We are a membership-led organization.  Unlike many districts who vet candidates by asking them to sit for an endorsement interview with the executive board or a specific committee, our membership prefers to directly endorse candidates. For the 2022 election cycle, you will simply need to fill out the correct 46th District Democrats' questionnaire when we have it available, and attend our endorsement meeting (or send a surrogate) on May 22nd.

It would be best if you participate in our candidate forums, as well, but it is not required for endorsement.

Our membership reads your questionnaire, does their own research on you, and we make our endorsement choices as a body.

Are there any other bits and pieces candidates should know?

Yes.  This is an info sheet that has gone out to candidates previously.  It has many of our most frequently asked questions:
