Indigenous Peoples' Day + Monthly Meeting Coming Up!

One thing we share as Democrats is how good it feels to live in a region where on the second Monday of October our cities celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, instead of celebrating that other guy who wasn't so great.

We start each 46th District Democrats' meeting with a recognition that we live, work, play, and meet on the land of the Duwamish People, a Coast Salish tribe.

Regrettably, the Duwamish still are not federally recognized, even though the 18th largest city in the nation, Seattle, is named for one of their great leaders.

The Duwamish were recognized for about a week in January of 2001, as granting their federal recognition, along with a few other overlooked tribal nations, was one of the last acts of Bill Clinton's presidency.  One of the first acts of George W. Bush's presidency was to rescind the recognition of the Duwamish.

The Duwamish continue their fight for formal federal recognition today.  If you would like to learn more about today's Duwamish, and perhaps participate in Real Rent Duwamish, which, through Seattle area residents paying small amounts of voluntary rent to the original occupants of this land, raises funds for the Duwamish tribe and information center, please visit:

Join us for our combination October meeting and PCO packet pickup day this Wednesday!

And we will get you into the spirit just before ballots drop with our program this month! For our main program this month, we have invited the our local endorsed candidates to join us, give us an overview of what's happening with their campaigns as they ramp up, and how you can get involved.

Heading up this distinguished bunch will be King County Director of Elections Julie Wise, who will talk about the new voter registration database and cyber security for elections.
