46th District Dems March 2024 News Roundup

Hello 46th District Democrats –

Here's what our organization was up to in March!

March 21 Regular Membership Meeting

Our March meeting was called to order at 7:06pm and adjourned at 12:14am. Approximately 290 members and guests attended over the course of the evening. Here are some highlights from the meeting:

Following a welcome and declaration of quorum, by Chair Hunter Brown, and a Land Acknowledgement, by Member At Large Shane Macomber, we covered the following business item:

In addition to the above business items, we also heard a Membership Report from Chair Brown; a few words of introduction from State Senator Manka Dhingra, who is running for State Attorney Genera; and received an overview of our ballot tally practices by Executive Board Member Alex Phillips-White.

The bulk of our meeting was then spent on an Old Business item from the February Regular Membership Meeting. At that meeting, the body voted to adjourn before a vote was taken on a Proposed Amendment to the Unity Resolution on the Crisis in Israel and Gaza. As we proceeded to consider this proposed amendment, a series of motions were made, including:

  • Motion to postpone resolution indefinitely
  • Motion to withdraw the motion to postpone resolution indefinitely - passed
  • Motion to refer to policy committee - failed

Moving back to a vote on the Proposed Amendment to the Unity Resolution on the Crisis in Israel and Gaza, that proposed amendment failed. A member then motioned to substitute the current resolution with text of the original resolution from the February meeting (Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza). After vigorous debate and consideration on if such a motion was in order, Chair Brown ruled that it was in order, after being advised by Parliamentarian Scott Forbes. A Motion to Over-rule the Chair failed, and we proceeded with a vote on the Motion to Substitute the Current Resolution with text of the original resolution from the February meeting. That motion passed, but not before a Motion to Adjourn was made and failed.

A member then made a Motion to suspend a rule, allowing us to call the question on the resolution itself. The motion needed a two-thirds approval, and failed. After another Motion to Adjourn failed, a Motion to Limit Debate on the Resolution to 20 Minutes passed. We then moved on to consider several amendments to the amended resolution (Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza), but they all failed. Finally, we began debate on the main motion, but the 20 minute clock ran out at midnight and we moved to final vote on the main motion, which passed, 88 votes for, to 45 votes against.

Pathway to Universal Healthcare event

Scott an Tara

THANK YOU to everyone who joined us on March 2 for the 46th District Democrats Program Event: Is there a pathway to Universal Healthcare?

Organized by Executive Board Members Kathy Bentson and Sylvia Haven, this well-attended event helped educate members on the importance of Universal Healthcare, and the steps each of us can take to advocate for it.

With a presentation by the president of Healthcare for All, Ronnie Shure, everyone in attendance was equipped with valuable information, and a list of actionable steps and resources.

Member Doug Mormann is now working on a resolution to support these efforts, so be on the lookout for ways you can get involved!
