Hello 46th District Democrats –

This is your official CALL TO MEETING for the May 16, 2023 46th District Democrats Regular Membership Meeting.

DATE: Tuesday, May 16, 2023
TIME: 7:00pm
LOCATION:  This meeting will be held on Zoom

🔵PLEASE REGISTER TO ATTEND:

The Effective Meetings Committee has again decided that it is impractical for the district to hold a set in-person meeting location for our membership meetings this month. In addition to the reasons outlined last month - limited location options and the toll on volunteer resources - the meetings this month present additional challenges because of the increased attendance expected during these meetings and the unknown number of people who would utilize an in-person location - making booking and assigning volunteers even more difficult. Therefore, the meetings for the month of May will continue to be Zoom-only. Thank you for your understanding. To request an accomodation, please follow the steps outlined on the 46th Dems Accommodations Request Process.

🔵 RENEW MEMBERSHIP FOR 2023:

Memberships expire on January 31 in accordance with our Standing Rules. To be eligible to vote, new members must pay dues or be granted a dues waiver 21 days in advance of the meeting. However, if you were a member the prior year, you will be eligible to vote 1 day after you renew your dues or receive a dues wavier. Refer to the Bylaws and Standing Rules for more information. Renew and learn how to receive a waiver here: https://www.46dems.org/become_a_member_today

    • Resolution to Approve Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day
    • Approved May 21, 2023 Endorsement Meeting for County and City positions and June 20 Endorsement Meeting for Judicial and School Board positions
  • We heard from two candidates for public offices that will be up for election later this year:
    • Cathy Moore, Seattle City Council, District 5
    • Becka Johnson Poppe, King County Council, District 4. [Our apologies to Becka, for failing to list her on the original agenda; it was our oversight]
  • We adopted 2023 Standing Endorsement Rules
  • We received Committee Updates, and shared how you can sign up to serve on one.

Missed the meeting? No problem! You can watch the recording on our 46th District Dems YouTube Channel (subscribe today!) and click here to see the April 18 2023 Meeting Chat Links and Comments for the meeting Agenda and all your need-to-know info from the meeting.

And, once again, none of this could have been possible without our amazing crew of meeting volunteers. Thank you to everyone who helped out!

📢 Committees At Work

Here’s what a few of our committees were up to this month:

  • Bylaws & Rules Committee

During April, the Bylaws and Rules Committee continued to develop proposed Standing Endorsement Rules that were adopted at the April 18th District meeting (see above). A major share of the committee’s 2023 work has been accomplished now that the 46th District Democrats have adopted Bylaws, Standing Rules, and Standing Endorsement Rules. Whew, and great job everyone!

Next up for the B&R committee is to begin writing up a Code of Conduct and Rules for Enforcement. The committee may also help advise other committees who choose to develop Standing Rules for their processes. We do not have a regular meeting time, but may adopt one in the future if needed. Members are welcome to join us; please email [email protected] for more information.

  • Effective Meetings Committee:

Under the leadership of Chair Bryce Cannatelli, the Effective Meetings Committee is reviewing feedback from members and is constantly assessing how to make our meetings more effective and inclusive, while balancing out the capabilities and availability of our volunteers.

We also identified Tally and Credential Leads, who are dedicated volunteers that will train and lead volunteers performing those roles. This will put less strain on our volunteers and make our organization more resilient.

We need all of the volunteers we can get for our upcoming Endorsement meetings. Contact Bryce at [email protected] if you want to get involved!

  • Membership Committee:

The membership committee is continuing to recruit new members to the district. We currently have 231 paid members and want to continue growing!

Endorsements are quickly approaching, and will be followed by Get Out The Vote (GOTV) season, so we will need all hands on deck. Please invite your friends, family, and network to join us at https://www.46dems.org/become_a_member_today.

New members must join by April 30th to vote at the May 21st endorsement meeting. 2022 members may renew at any time before the meeting, but we request that you do so ASAP to ensure things run smoothly!

  • Programs

We had another exciting afternoon of Soup Making @ Melissa Taylor's House on April 22, and look forward to holding this Mutual Aid focused event each month.

Our next Soup Making event will be held on Saturday, May 13th 2-4pm at Kathy Sakahara's House (**new location**), for chopping, mixing and cooking soup to take to the Stop the Sweeps Community hours the next day. We have a 24 quart pot so it takes many hands to fill it. Email [email protected] to RSVP and get the address.

These and other committee opportunities are available! See what the choices are, and let us know if you’re interested, at

Bryce Cannatelli Gives Presentation on Trans Rights at KCD

This month, our own Bryce Cannatelli gave a presentation to the King County Democrats about the current political landscape for trans people in the United States.

Bryce gave an overview of the legislative attacks that trans and nonbinary people are facing across the country, and broke down misleading transphobic talking points and rhetoric that are often used to justify these attacks. She also provided resources, and ways that people can support trans and nonbinary people in their communities."

🗳️ King County Voters Approve Crisis Care Center on April Ballot

Way to go King County Voters!! In the April Special Election, voters approved the Crisis Care Centers levy, Executive Constantine’s proposal to create a countywide network of five crisis care centers, restore and expand residential treatment beds, and grow the community behavioral health workforce.

The levy will generate more than $1.2 billion over nine years and will cost the median King County property owner an estimated $119 per year. The broad coalition who backed the proposal now turns to planning and implementation of this nation-leading opportunity to expand behavioral health access.

 Looking Ahead ….

We've made our reservations, so mark your calendars for the 46th District Dems Summer Picnic, happening Sunday, July 9, 2-4pm, being held once again at Northgate Community Center.

We need volunteers to assist with food planning, activity planning, set up, registration, clean up and so much more! If you'd like to help out, please email [email protected].

📌 Last but not least ….

It’s (still) never too late to renew your membership! (or start a new one)

Dues support the costs associated with running the 46th Legislative District, and give you voting power at Membership Meetings, for such items as endorsing candidates, ballot measures and resolutions; electing some executive board positions like At-Large Members of the Executive Board; and adopting and amending our budget.
